Hello friends!
I was working on a notification system the other day and decided the system will send out emails to notify concerned people. This sparked a discussion between a lot of senior members where one thing stuck with me.
“Do we really want more emails? It is an epidemic.”
That’s a pretty solid statement to make in the middle of a raging pandemic, wouldn’t you say?
But I agree, it is a lot. And the added pressure of an inbox-zero is worse.
I’ve not bothered with having to organize my email inbox in years. It’s a raging mess. But also, it is a digital mess. That’s what the search function is for.
My philosophy with emails is as follows:
-
Organize: Maintain a separate inbox/folder for people who regularly email you. These can be managers, friends, clients, or your community.
-
Skim, don’t read: Scan through yesterday’s email for anything that stands out. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t get opened.
-
Set expectations: Emails are not the place to contact me for a quick turnaround. Skype, Teams, Messages, Calls - do that.
How do you manage the barrage of emails you receive? Are you an inbox-zero person? Hit reply to let me know!
And that’s it for today. I hope this one’s an email you don’t skim over!
